Welcome to the first edition of Northern Insights: The Homeschool and Correspondence Report for Alaska and Beyond.
I’m your host, Tony Baylinson, coming to you from the PACE Statewide Correspondence School in Southeast Alaska.
Our first story comes from Mary Fabry, who’s daughter Kristina, was a PACE correspondence student for a number of years. Through PACE Kristina began studying German and her part time studies soon became a full time obsession with the German language and culture. One of Kristina’s educational dreams came true last summer when she was accepted into the Concordia Language Villages program, based out of Concordia College in Moorehead, Minnesota.
Concordia Language Village, which began sponsored its first two week German camp as a test project in 1961, has since constructed year round authentic villages that teach not only language but immerse the students in the entire culture. Programs include not only the German Language Village but also villages focusing on immersion in Norwegian, French, Finnish, Spanish and Russian.
Kristina was excited but nervous about her first summer at the program in 2004, but quickly realized what an amazing experience and opportunity she was involved in. “When we walked onto the marketplace just before the parents' program, we saw our daughter from a distance, surrounded by a gaggle of friends and laughing. And when she saw us her first words were 'Hi, Dad, I'm DEFINITELY coming back next year!” The friends she made that first summer will last a lifetime.
Kristina retuned this summer to the German Language Village and her counselors speak highly of attitude, German speaking ability, and enthusiasm. Her goal now is to return for the one-month summer program for the next three years and eventually be fluent enough to be invited in a counselor.
“We really appreciate the part that PACE played in introducing her to the German language.” Fabry stated in a recent visit to the Ketchikan office. “Foreign language is a perfect fit for correspondence students. It certainly made a difference for Kristina to be able to study at home on her own schedule.”
For more information on Concordia Language Villages, or to see Kristina’s winning entry in the 2005 International Nametag Day Photo Contest, visit concordialanguagevilliages.com and click on the “about the villages” link. Thanks to the Fabry family of Ketchikan Alaska for their involvement with the PACE program and the contribution of this correspondence success story.
